10,000 hours of practice

Image
According to the book Outliers, it takes people about 10,000 hours of practice at one particular thing to master it.  Sports, musical instruments, etc.  Brooklynn has been playing soccer for 4 seasons now.  Now at the age almost 8 years old, it is time to pick a position and start that 10,000 hours of practice.  Today, her coach has placed her in the goalie position for 3 reasons. 1. Brooklynn LOVES playing defense 2. Brooklynn's height and reach will be perfect  3. Brooklynn is actually good at it Since 10,000 hours comes down to about 10 years of practice, I have put her into 2 leagues this season.  Let's see if we can cut this 10 years-to-master theory down to 5 or 6.  Wish us luck!

Kickin' It

Soccer season is back.  It is Brooklynn's last year in the non-competitive league.  Next year, she moves up to a more challenging league where scores and stats start to count.  God help us.  This season, Brooklynn gets the special treat of having daddy co-coach to help her prepare for next year's competitive league. This year you can already see some dramatic improvements in Brooklynn.  The horse-gallop she used to call "running" has disappeared and seems to have been replaced with a proper sprint.  Her ball control and dribbling has dramatically improved along with her aggressiveness.  Hallelujah!  In today's game, Brooklynn scored the first goal of the season giving her that familiar feeling of confidence and reassurance. Let's hope she continues to improve, keep her head in the game, score more goals, and learn to kick with her left foot.  All while having fun, of coarse. Good game, Brookie!
