FESCO Back Pack Drive- Pt. I
I have always felt strongly that volunteering is an important part of helping to shape Brooklynn's identity. By doing so, I feel it teaches her about selflessness and humility, gives her confidence, and shows her other realities. Her volunteer interests include nature, the elderly, and less fortunate families.
Family Emergency Shelter Coalition (FESCO) is an organization we have worked with for about a year. It is a Bay Area non-profit organization that offers assistance to displaced and less fortunate families by offering food, clothing, shelter, school supplies, household items, job training, parenting and life skills, etc. It is an organization dedicated to acting as a community for those who don't have one. You can learn more or volunteer at www.fescofamilyshelter.org
Today, we got together in Castro Valley to pack 250 backpacks for children living in the shelters who are going back to school next week. This event always reminds Brooklynn that even her hardest days aren't as hard as these kids who live in a gymnasium with strangers, sleep on cots, and who still must concentrate on school.

Brooklynn hand-picked every supply. She took her time to sift through binders, folders, pencil pouches, pencils, etc. to make sure that every backpack she packed was special.
At first I was frustrated she took so long to complete one backpack until I realized how much it meant to her that each child receiving their backpack was proud of it. Afterall, they would carry this backpack and it's contents for an entire school year. At that moment I realized that this event wasn't just about how many backpacks we could finish. We were packing these bags with dreams, goals, encouragement, confidence, and love.

250+ backpacks finished!
On Saturday, we will hand these backpacks out to the kids in Hayward. We just can't wait to help start off the school year on a positive note for these kids.
