Smarter Than A Zombie

It could happen. The end of civilization as we know it could be wiped away almost instantly by Mother Nature. No matter how well our house is built or how much food and water we have stored away, WE WILL NOT BE PREPARED ENOUGH. And when it happens, we will turn on each other like zombies.

In preparation for the end of the world, I have decided to try and learn some self-sustaining skills that will separate myself from your average zombie. I plan on covering the basics: food, water, shelter, and safety.

1. Gardening- Let's face it. We are spoiled. We're so accustomed to buying everything from a grocery store that if the giant quake were to happen right now, we'd be living off canned beans from our pantry. After we attack our neighbors and eat their canned beans, we will eventually die a slow death from hypertension-related diseases.

Zombies can't grow food. This means we must learn to do it.

2. Camping- I'm not talking RV living. I mean backpacking in for a few miles with limited supplies, starting a fire from scratch, and purifying water from a nearby stream. If we are going to have any chance of surviving a natural disaster, we're going need to need to go without our bottled water and espresso machines.

I don't know one zombie who can start a fire from rocks or who can build shelter from trees. In fact, zombies can't climb trees. Perhaps we should figure out how to make tree houses.

3. Firearms- I know, I know. It is very unpopular in California to encourage firearms. Californians would prefer using a martial art as the only means of self defense. But firearms have multiple uses. Bullets can outrun an zombie or animal.

If nothing else, everyone should learn how to handle a firearm properly. Zombies don't know how to release the safety on a gun nor how to reload the clips. Take advantage of this.

In addition to the basic survival skills above, I recommend learning the advanced basics How to sew, make soap, and treat medical emergencies with natural remedies are essential secondary survival skills. Of course, none of these advanced skills will matter if you don't master the basics first. You won't be around long enough.

Happy learning!
